This is Bo. We've discussed Bo before--Scott's brother's dog. Anyhoo..we're dog sitting again. Hmm...this sounds like we don't like dog-sitting. Quite the contrary. we're always a little sad to give him back! So a couple of days ago, I noticed that his right eye was a little red and was starting to goop. I wasn't too worried and decided to give it a day or two to clear up. Well, it didn't so I called BIL on vacation and asked what he wanted us to do. Should we take him in or wait for them to come home and they could do it? He asked if we'd take him in and get his 2 year shots while we were at it. Sure, no worries. So I make an appointment with our vet and in we go. They prod around in his eye a bit after (generously!) applying a topical anesthetic. They couldn't find anything in there and decided he'd probably just gotten some dirt or pollen or something in there. They gave him his vaccinations, gave us some gunk to put in his eye a couple of times a day and we went on our way. We came home, had some dinner and went outside to play. So we're playing and Bo is running around and rubbing his face in the grass like crazy. Jack tells me Bo threw up in the grass (thank heavens we were outside!) and I didn't think anything of it until I saw Bo's face. This is what it looked like:
Holy crap! You can't really catch all his puffy glory, but his poor snout looked like he had a tennis ball on the end of his nose and his jowls look like he's storing some puppy chow for winter. Poor guy! I'm a farm girl--we don't worry about these things right away. I called the vet to be sure and they told me to give him some Benedryl and wait about an hour and a half. So I do and we do. After about 2 hours it's no better at all and I'm worried he's having trouble breathing. (Maybe he was just so doped up he couldn't muster the energy!) So I call the Animal Hospital back and they tell me to bring him in. So we go in and the doctor was great. He was pretty surprised at how puffy he was, but gave him a shot of steroids and $100 later we were on our way. We got home and he was just going nuts. He was super agitated and rubbing his face all over the carpet, panting and drooling like his life depended on it. His body was super warm and I was worried that maybe he was having a reaction to the steroid (because, really, how ironic would that be?) so I call the place back. (And by "place" I mean, my great new friend Danielle at the Animal Hospital) She has me talk to the doctor who tells me that I need to come back in and get a sedative for him. Trip #3 to the vet and it's 10:30PM. I get there, get the stuff (by now I have enough dog pills in my purse to worry about explaining to an officer of the law) and go home. I get home and he's still freaking out, rubbing his face, I have a massive drool puddle on my couch only now, he has HUGE welts all over his body, including little ones on his snout. Call Danielle again. seriously, by now, if she doesn't put me in her wedding I will be shocked! She tells me to talk to the doctor who tells me it's part of the reaction, give him the sedative and make sure I check on him every few hours to make sure he's breathing okay. This is Bo now:
Passed out, snoring and probably dreaming of chasing poor Lucy. I am not going to lie that those tranquilizers are looking mighty tempting right now!
Fais des bonnes reves! I hope I will.

Poor doggy!! Pegs, you are such a fun writer, I LOVE your blog!
You got any extras of those tranquillizers?
I'd really like to mash one up and put it in Luke's grilled cheese.
LOL! The sad thing is, Jen, I just had a visual of you standing at the kitchen counter grinding up tranq's for Lukie. Seriously - I lol'd - in a big way. Wow.
Peggy, I'm amazed at you. I'd have given up on the dog... I don't even know how long ago. Welts all over his body? I'd have checked him into the pet hospital and driven away and left the professionals to take care of him. Wowza....
My goal for this morning is to say your blog title 5 times fast.
I love BO, we became instant friends the 2 minutes I spent with him the other day.
