Okay so my personal Graceland isn't in Memphis Tennessee. It's in Draper, Utah and you might know it as "Ikea."
So Ikea opened yesterday, holy cow, what a spectacle! There were news crews, radio stations, news helicopters overhead...You'd have thought a cult had barricaded themselves inside. It was wonderful, though. I went at the last minute (well, it was like 5PM) which was a good choice--it was in between surges of shoppers. I even got a parking space right up front!! The store was full of wide-eyed wanderers, mostly Draper Wives and gay couples--oddly enough. There were free samples of Swedish sparkling cider(Jack likes Orange), live bands with long haired young men wearing their sisters' pants--which we've discussed before--and playing various instruments you'd not imagine a long haired young man wearing his sister's pants to be playing--like the trumpet. It sounded great, though. the place is HUGE, I can't tell you how many times I got turned around and how grateful I am for extensive signage. Or should I say extensive directionage. Anyhoo...it was magic.
It has been FOREVER since I've been inside an Ikea--when I lived in Europe, to be exact. I've actually never been to one in the States. I felt like I was back in Europe, it was WONDERFUL. I can't wait to buy a house now just so I have a good reason to go in there and spend an obscene amount of money! (By the way, thanks to my little adventure yesterday and an evening at a Heritage Makers party, my spending has officially received the ole "Smack Down" and I now have a "discretionary spending" budget every month. So friends and family, please don't tempt me to shop or go out to lunch until July, when I can spend money again!) Anyway, it was worth it and I am content. Enter deep sigh of satisfaction.
